Clinton County
Iowa Fair
History
For more than a century, the Clinton County Fair has brought our community together to celebrate agriculture, youth, and summer fun. What began in 1881 as a small gathering of local families has grown into a beloved tradition that showcases the hard work, talent and spirit of Clinton County. Today, the fair continues to evolve while honoring the roots that made it a highlight of every summer.

1881
The Greatest Little Fair Begins
Community leaders G.D. Staggs and Salem Cotton organize the very first Clinton County Fair under the Clinton County Agricultural Society. They created a place where the community could come together with a focus on agriculture. Staggs goes on to serve as president for an incredible 28 years, shaping the fair’s early identity.
1926
A Time of Uncertainty
Despite whispers about whether the fair could survive, 1926 delivers one of the most impressive fairs yet, complete with standout exhibits and fireworks that draw crowds from across the county. The fair’s resilience becomes part of its legacy.
1940s-Early 2000s
Growing with Clinton County
Over the decades, the fair evolves into the Clinton County Club Show, continuing its mission of celebrating youth, agriculture, and community pride. Exhibits expand, entertainment grows, and the fairgrounds become a gathering place for thousands each summer.
Early 1930s
A Community Revival
After a brief pause, the fair returns stronger than ever in the early 1930s. Local families, 4‑H clubs, and agricultural leaders rally together to bring the tradition back to life, cementing the fair as a summer staple for generations to come.
2020-Today
Focusing on Youth
Adapting to the challenges of COVID‑19 and limited real estate, the Clinton County Fair continues to bring the community together with youth livestock shows in partnership with the Iowa State University Extension Office, evening entertainment, kids’ activities, and plenty of food and fun for all ages.
